Adventures of a Hometown Tourist

Carmel Cruising – Without the Tour Bus!

carmel-cruising-logo

Each issue of The Voice we are comparing living and visiting Carmel-by-the-Sea with the types of activities you would do when taking a cruise. In fact, cruise ships come into Monterey Bay and thousands of people flock to our Village to explore and shop in one of the most amazing places on the planet! We want to encourage our members to do the same as there are plenty of places to explore and world-class shopping and dining that many of us have never stepped foot in.

Story-Book-CottageThe Carmel Cruising column, always has two parts. The first discusses the shopping, dining and entertainment aspects of cruising and how you can get the same experience in Carmel. The second presents opportunities to be a Hometown Tourist so you can explore the Monterey Peninsula by taking walking and driving tours that present a vast amount of history, architecture and just plain beautiful scenery right in our own backyard. Each issue we feature another walking or driving tour and there are two versions of each one. You can either read through the tour on your computer in blog format or get some exercise by taking a voice-driven, GPS-activated version on your Apple or Android mobile phone using the VoiceMap App.

The blog versions of each tour tend to be more detailed and include one or more pictures of each stop. The VoiceMap versions are $4.99 online or you can stop by the Chamber Visitors Center in Carmel Plaza to get an introductory price of $3.99. The helpful VC volunteers will also assist you in downloading the VoiceMap App, downloading the tours and giving you some pointers. We think you will find these tours to be a great way to get acquainted first-hand with our community.
