John Thodos, FA IA (1934 - 2009) cultivated a fiercely independent and sophisticated Modern ism which he deftly melded with the particulars of place and context creati ng some of the most distinguished architecture on the Monterey Peninsula. T his talk traces his life and development of his unique style with special f ocus on his iconic works in Carmel-by-the-Sea, demonstrating his sensitive use of scale, material, form and detail.

rarchitecture.com), Erik worked with John Thodos for 17 years as his primar
y associate. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of
Oregon, is long-time chair of the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Historic Reso
urce Board, is 2020 Vice President of AIA Monterey Bay and author of an upc
oming book from ORO Editions on the story of John Thodos’ last built design
