While we will have a number of interesting and engaging online programs over the coming weeks, this one has taken on some serious overton es with what has happened to our beautiful Village over the past few months . In a blink of an eye our it has been virtually shut down by a county orde r, with not a tour bus in sight and no revenue from tourism coming into the City. Unfortunately, this unthinkable tragedy will mean our Village will n ever be the same. The commercial district will come back but not to what it was before. Empty storefronts will need to be filled eventually...but with what? Will there ever be or should there be tour busses like before? Will we need as many hotels, art galleries and wine tasting rooms? What are the economics of running a restaurant or hotel with social distancing and exten sive cleaning requirements?
The Carmel Residence Associa tion has, for 33 years, taken a long-term approach to protecting the charac ter of our Village-in-the-Forest. And, we will continue to do that. The foc us of this panel discussion was originally to look back at how 15 Carmelite s created a report back in 1991 that was to dream about the Village when we celebrated our millennium in 2016. However, after speaking with Mayor Pott er it has become clear that our focus now needs to be working with all cons tituents to get our City open again. We all love the quiet streets but, for better or worse, our City budget and the livelihoods of our business owner s depends on the hotels, restaurants and shops being open and busy. So, we are changing the focus of this panel discussion to a more short-term perspe ctive. How can we slowly and safely emerge to start the rebuilding process.
We want your ideas and questions to help us prepare for this panel discussion. You can send them to us at info@carmelresidents.org or use this form. Please include you name and email if you would like to join in the discussion onl ine.
