Giving back – volunteering to help the Carmel Residents Association organize programs and events, volunteering to serve the community around us – is a core value and cherished practice of the CRA.
As the British writer and activist Elizabeth Andrews wisely noted, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.’’

Members donate their time, energy and skills in so many ways. They greet members of the public and fellow members of the CRA at regularly scheduled events, where they help set up tables and chairs and serve wine and snacks. They staff the CRA booth at Carmel-by-the-Sea’s annual Fourth of July celebration, where they serve fresh fruit generously donated by area businesses to locals and visitors, free of charge. They prepare food and pour drinks at our annual summer barbeque in Pebble Beach.
One of the best-known CRA activities is the Carmel Beach Clean-Up program. It is also one of the oldest, dating back to the 1980s. In 2017, the CRA joined with Lovers of Carmel Beach to form CRA Lovers of Carmel Beach, making this venerable program even stronger. No one gets paid – with money, that is – to help us reach our goal of creating a clean, sparkling Carmel Beach. They just do it.
Members also volunteer well beyond the CRA, at Monterey County jewels such as Sunset Center, Point Lobos, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Carmel Mission, Carmel Foundation and many more.
None of them has the time. All of them have the heart.
