The Carmel Residents Association’s bimonthly print publication, The Voice, is now accepting paid advertising, in line with a decision made last year by the CRA Board of Directors. Our new policy goes into effect beginning with the May/June 2018 issue.

The Carmel-by-the-Sea Planning Commission voted 4-0 on Wednesday, March 13, to put a hold (a ‘continuance’) on its approval of a design concept for a three-story Eighth Avenue building project. The project would result in the loss of 16 trees to accommodate the owner of the adjoining property who wants to use 1,103 square feet of city right-of-way for his ambitious development.
The CRA recently conducted a members-only online straw poll to find out what members thought about paying the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau to plan and execute destination marketing that promotes Carmel-by-the-Sea to visiting tourists. We asked CRA members to give a simple yes or no answer. The question was: “Should the city give the Monterey Convention and Visitors Bureau $176,857 for destination marketing for the 2018/19 fiscal year?”
(March 7, 2018) As Council members, the three of us were required to serve as a review panel to address the accusations of sexual harassment against Mayor Steve Dallas.
We had been informed by the City’s legal counsel – as you have seen now – as to whether or not the City has exposure to either criminal or civil liability as a result of the alleged conduct by the Mayor. And we can report that the actions complained of will not result in any exposure to the City.

Carmel-by-the-Sea Mayor Steve Dallas was exonerated March 7 of sexual harassment by an independent investigator hired by the city. As a result, the city council has allowed the mayor to stay on the job while also reprimanding him for personal misconduct that was not illegal but was deemed inappropriate. Dallas offered to make a public apology and the council has agreed. The vote was 3-0 to accept the investigation report, with council member Bobby Richards excused.
An independent investigation of Mayor Steve Dallas exonerates him of any illegality and most charges of personal misconduct. The Carmel Residents Association calls upon the mayor’s opponents to accept the city council’s decision and reject rumors and conspiracy theories. That said, Mayor Dallas must learn from his mistakes and work hard to rebuild trust. This is a time for our city to heal and move forward together.
Yesterday, [February 5, 2018], the Carmel Residents Association Board of Directors voted unanimously on a resolution to hold the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea accountable for the promises it has made in overseeing the beach fire pilot program on Carmel Beach. The CRA board also voted to support an immediate halt of the pilot program until all areas adopted in the Beach Fire Management Pilot document dated June 2016 are ready to be enforced.

Back in September 2017, we tabulated the results of 17 topics that were put to CRA members for a vote. Additionally, in January, we held an online, members-only straw poll of how members felt about the proliferation of wine-tasting rooms in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, so, 18 topics of concern in all.
The appeal by the Carmel Residents Association of the planning commission’s decision to approve another wine-tasting room south of Ocean Avenue has been withdrawn. This was a difficult decision; however, following a meeting at city hall, we felt it highly unlikely that the appeal would prevail at the council level. Therefore, the expenditure of almost $1,000 in filing fees could no longer be justified.
