On December 20, 2017, the CRA signed an agreement with Harrison Memorial Library’s Local History Room to archive ink-on-paper copies of our newsletters, going back at least to 1988. The library will also receive paper copies of every new issue of The Voice (formerly CRA News) on publication.
Our holiday party will be a scrumptious sit-down dinner at historic La Playa Hotel, southwest corner of Eighth Avenue and Camino Real, starting at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9.
Long-time CRA members will remember the splendid holiday dinners we used to have at this grand dame of Carmel hotels. Memories of Erl Lagerholm come to mind. This was his favorite CRA event and we hold this dinner in his loving memory.
Welcome, dear friends, to the Carmel Residents Association.
We of the CRA are excited to have this fresh redesign and relaunch of our website. We believe the changes we have made will make the site user-friendly for members and non-members alike.

Aggressive street touts in open doorways of some downtown businesses have long been an aggravation to residents, workers, neighboring businesses and visitors in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Recently, aggravation turned to consternation in two instances involving Ocean Avenue skin-care shops.

“Plus ça change’’ – a saying attributed to French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr – is usually translated as “The more things change, the more they remain the same.’’
Karr wrote those words in the 19th century, and they seem as true now as they did back in his day. Consider this local example: The site of the shuttered Carmel Resort Inn, tucked into the northeast corner of Carmel-by-the-Sea, left empty and forlorn since February when the motel closed without notice.
The CRA convenes a select committee to nominate worthy candidates for our Citizens of the Year Award. The award goes to residents of Carmel-by-the-Sea or its sphere of influence who have, by word and deed, contributed significantly to the quality of life in our village. The prestigious award has been given out all told to 31 accomplished recipients. The winner is announced in odd-numbered years at the Citizen of the Year Celebration held in February or March.
