MEASURE C Passes

Once in a while there are issues that come forward that are very important to the future of our Village. Measure C is one of  them. The CRA, along with the Carmel Chamber and our City officials strongly encouraged all of our members and other citizens who are registered to vote in Carmel-by-the-Sea to VOTE YES on Measure C.

With the help of our over 700 CRA members Measure C was passed with 709 or 61% of the votes in favor. Thanks to our City Council, Chamber and CRA members who worked to make this a success for the Village.

The CRA is excited to continue to offer casual get-togethers at a local restaurant during Happy Hour. On April 14th we will gather at La Playa’s Bud’s Bar from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. This casual evening will include a no-host bar and small bites from the bar menu. This is a great opportunity to get out and meet your fellow Carmelites! No reservations are required. We look forward to seeing you there. We might even take advantage of their offer to donate $100 to get dime drinks for the house!

The Future of Carmel Program Summary

A very successful CRA event, Carmel Looking Forward – The Future of our Town, was held Thursday, January 30 at Carpenter Hall at Sunset Center. Over 100 attendees heard from 4 distinguished panelists about the future of Carmel. The program was moderated by CRA Board Member Tom Parks. We would like to thank the panelists and the enthusiastic audience for their attendance.

Our Facebook Manager Nancy Twomey prepared detailed notes on the meeting and our Staff Photographer also recorded the entire program on his iPhone. Click on the links below to see them:

Being a Good Neighbor Builder

This is an extended version of an article that was originally in the CityScape column of the November 2018 Voice Newsletter.

One of my favorite sayings is “The more things change, the more things stay the same”.  As an example, at first glance, it would seem that there is too much construction going on around town these days in Carmel-by-the-Sea.  But, let’s look back in time.  Santiago Duckworth sold the first 200 lots in Carmel City in only 6 months in 1889 and had sold 300 more by 1895.  That’s a lot of activity in an embryonic town!  Due to a number of factors, but mostly because the railroad didn’t come over the hill from Monterey as hoped and a 5 year depression that began in 1893, things slowed down.

Crafting a Marketplace Video

In the January 2020 VOICE newsletter, the Out and About column has an overview of the 2019 Homecrafter’s Marketplace. It was a wonderful success that was enjoyed by both those who sold their beautiful products and those who came to find fantastic hand-crafted products.  If you’d like to get an overview of this year’s Marketplace you can click here to view a 6 minute video which shows how the event is setup, many of the products that were on display and interviews with several of the vendors. If you missed the article you can find it on Page 3 of this issue of The Voice.

Become an Energy Producing Composter

As seen in the CityScape column of the November 2019 VOICE Newsletter

The CRA is providing compostable 4 gallon “Bio Bags” to be used for collecting your compostable table scraps.  These bags can be picked-up at Carmel City Hall, in the Park Branch Library’s Book Shrine or Barbara Livingston’s “Green Garden” driveway at the NW corner of San Carlos and 13th. Please take only what you need for this program. It's really quite easy. Scrape your plates, including nut shells and bones, in the bag and store it in your refrigerator until the bag is full. When it is full, drop the bag in the yellow bin at the Thursday Farmer’s Market or the driveway on left side of City Hall. It will go through a process that heats it to over 350 degrees, producing methane gas that powers our wastewater treatment plant and a waste product that is used as compost product component. How cool is that! You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll collect and see how our 720 CRA Carmelites can help our community achieve our recycling goals.  If you want to buy your own bags you can get them here: www.bit.ly/biobags.

Carmel Police Department Ride-a-long Voice Extra Edition

By Dale Byrne

If you want to get an appreciation for the fine work our Carmel Police Department officers do to protect and serve our citizens, you should do a “ride-a-long” with one of our patrol officers.  You will quickly learn what a challenging job they have and one where they come each day not knowing what is going to pop-up.  And, even in our sleepy little Village, things do pop-up!

California Public Records Act (CPRA) Request Overview

While many of our CRA members understand that government transparency rules exist, it is likely that plenty of us are unaware of the process that takes place each and every month behind the scenes at City hall to fulfill information requests from interested parties.  The following paragraph was taken directly from the City website:

As a public agency, the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea adheres to the California Public Records Act (CPRA) which requires that governmental records shall be disclosed to the public, upon request, unless there is a specific reason not to do so.  Permissible exemptions from disclosure include documents that invade an individual’s right to privacy (e.g., privacy in certain personnel or medical records) or hinder the government’s need to perform its assigned functions in a reasonably efficient manner (e.g., maintaining confidentiality of investigative records, official information, records related to pending litigation, and preliminary notes or memoranda).  To request public records please email [email protected].

The Cottage That Is A Carmel Museum

It is late morning on a Thursday. The slight rain has passed and the sun is streaming through moist oak leaves into the small living room of perhaps the most beautiful cottage in the village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Built by legendary Mike Murphy in 1905 and virtually untouched through 113 years, this Lincoln Street art object is the home of Linda and Jackson Smith. We’re here to talk about beauty and history, and in this case, they are one in the same. Entering the house. the first words that come to mind are—it smells like Carmel!

You and your husband are fortunate people to live in this jewel, Linda. The house seems intact. It’s mostly original 1905?
